Summary
From 5th to 8th January 2009, 466 delegates from 46 countries celebrated the bicentenary of Louis Braille’s birth by taking part in the international conference entitled “Braille 1809-2009: Writing with six dots and its future”. The conference, organized by the Valentin Haüy Association (AVH) and the National Institute for the Young Blind (INJA), was held at the Headquarters of UNESCO (Paris). The proceedings are now being published.
· Conference programme· List of countries represented· Texts of the contributions· Synthesis of the sessions· Resolutions adopted by the conference· Letter to Louis Braille· Louis Braille – a brief overview
Certain contributors, fortunately few in number, failed to provide their speeches in written form, which explains why they could not be included.
The contributions are published in the language they were given in (English or French). For the sake of consistency, we have standardised the spelling of the word “braille” so that in French it is written with a capital (Braille) for the man Louis Braille and not when it means the code that bears his name. In English, the capital is also used for the national alphabets (e.g. Japanese Braille), whereas in all other cases the term is a common name or adjective and therefore does not require a capital. As shown in the programme, a brief synthesis of the sessions appears in the closing session
